What Is the Horseback Ride to Xunantunich from San Ignacio Really Like?

This is not a standard Xunantunich visit where the journey happens mainly by vehicle. After pickup in San Ignacio, the horseback portion begins at San Lorenzo Farm / St. Leonard’s Stable. From the farm, riders travel through the Cayo countryside toward San José Succotz, moving between open farm country, greener trail sections and the Mopan River setting. The approach makes the landscape between the farm and the Maya site part of the experience rather than simply transportation.

The most distinctive part of the approach comes at the hand-cranked Succotz ferry. Riders dismount before the crossing, and the horses cross the Mopan River with the group; guests remount only after reaching solid ground. From there, the horseback approach continues toward Xunantunich. The archaeological visit itself is completed on foot with a guide, giving you time to explore the plazas and El Castillo before the return horseback journey toward San Lorenzo Farm.

THE ROUTE, STEP BY STEP

Your Horseback Route from San Lorenzo Farm to Xunantunich

After pickup in San Ignacio, the riding experience begins at San Lorenzo Farm and moves through the Cayo countryside toward San José Succotz and the Mopan River. The route’s defining transition is the hand-cranked ferry: riders dismount and the horses cross with the group before the guided Xunantunich visit on foot. Exact timing can shift with trail, ferry, weather and site conditions.

SAN LORENZO FARM | BEFORE YOU RIDE

After pickup in San Ignacio, you arrive at San Lorenzo Farm / St. Leonard’s Stable, the operating base for this horseback experience. Before mounting, the guide prepares the group with riding instructions, helmet fitting and practical guidance for the trail. This is also the time to tell the guide if you are a first-time or nervous rider, have concerns about mounting or balance, or need extra explanation before the group leaves the farm.

THE JOURNEY BECOMES PART OF THE TOUR

From the farm, the horseback route moves through the Cayo landscape toward modern San José Succotz. St. Leonard’s current tour descriptions reference open savannah, jungle and riverside trail sections along part of the Mopan River. Rather than treating Xunantunich as a destination reached only by vehicle, this portion makes the changing countryside part of the experience. The exact trail surface, shade, pace and conditions can vary with weather and the route used on the day.

THE SIGNATURE FERRY CROSSING

At San José Succotz, riders dismount before the ferry crossing. NICH requires horseback riders to dismount at the ferry, and St. Leonard’s published itinerary describes guests leading the horses aboard the hand-cranked ferry, crossing the Mopan River, leading them off and remounting on solid ground. The important distinction is simple: the horses cross the river with the group, but guests do not remain mounted while the ferry moves. Ferry queues or high-river conditions can affect the exact flow of this stage.

XUNANTUNICH | GUIDED ARCHAEOLOGICAL VISIT

At Xunantunich, the archaeological portion of the experience is completed on foot. Your guide leads you through the site’s plazas and structures and provides context for what you are seeing, rather than leaving the ruins as a photo stop. El Castillo is the principal landmark within the reserve. Expect uneven ground and steps during the walking portion. Climbing any structure is optional and depends on the access rules in effect on the day, so it should never be treated as guaranteed.

THE RETURN JOURNEY

After the guided visit, the horseback experience continues with the return ride toward San Lorenzo Farm, followed by drop-off in the San Ignacio area. This makes the tour a genuine round-trip riding experience, not a one-way horseback photo opportunity followed by a vehicle transfer. Trail conditions, ferry queues, weather, guest pace and archaeological-site access can all affect the flow of the day, so return timing should be treated as approximate rather than an exact minute.

The hand-cranked ferry crossing is part of the route, not a separate add-on.

Included

San Ignacio Town pickup & returnPickup and return transportation within San Ignacio Town are included in the standard tour package.

Guided round-trip horseback routeThe experience includes the horseback journey from San Lorenzo Farm toward Xunantunich and the return ride, with the route moving through the Cayo countryside toward Succotz and the Mopan River setting.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Is the Horseback Ride to Xunantunich Right for You?

First-time riders can participate, but this is still an active horseback-and-archaeology experience. For this route, riders must weigh under 250 lb. Guests should also be able to mount and dismount with assistance, stay balanced on a moving horse, follow the guide’s instructions, dismount for the Succotz ferry and walk over uneven archaeological terrain at Xunantunich. If any part is uncertain, contact St. Leonard’s before booking so the team can help you choose the right experience.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE THIS RIDE Four practical points matter more than a generic “easy” or “moderate” label

St. Leonard’s welcomes first-time riders, but suitability still depends on the real demands of the horseback route, ferry transition and archaeological visit.

Rider weight for this route

Riders must weigh under 250 lb for this horseback experience. This is a tour eligibility requirement for the route and horses used on the day.

Mounting, balance and following instructions

You should be able to mount and dismount with assistance, remain balanced on a moving horse and respond to the guide’s directions throughout the ride.

Ferry transition and walking at Xunantunich

Riders dismount for the Succotz ferry, then later explore Xunantunich on foot over outdoor archaeological terrain with uneven surfaces and steps.

Outdoor conditions in Cayo

Heat, sun, rain or muddy trail conditions can make the experience more demanding. Tell the guide if discomfort, fear, numbness or instability develops during the ride.

St. Leonard’s will match you with a horse that aligns with your energy.

COME PREPARED

What to Wear & Bring for the Horseback Ride to Xunantunich

Dress for two different parts of the same experience: time on horseback and walking at Xunantunich. Fitted long pants and secure closed-toe footwear are the most useful starting point for riding comfort, while the archaeological site also requires footwear suited to rugged outdoor terrain. Add light tropical clothing, sun and insect protection, and a compact rain layer. St. Leonard’s currently provides a riding helmet and water.

Wear

Fitted long pants for riding comfort

Long pants are strongly recommended for the horseback portions because they can reduce rubbing and help protect your legs from minor trail contact. Choose a comfortable fit that lets you move freely in the saddle.

Secure closed-toe shoes or boots with good grip

Choose footwear that stays firmly on your feet for mounting, riding and the ferry transition, then remains comfortable on Xunantunich’s uneven outdoor paths and steps. NICH requires outdoor-appropriate footwear for rugged archaeological terrain.

Lightweight, breathable clothing

Cayo can be hot and humid, and this tour combines riding with outdoor walking. Wear a light shirt that allows comfortable movement and dries reasonably quickly if conditions become warm or damp.

Bring

Sunscreen & insect repellent

The route moves through exposed countryside as well as greener sections, and the Xunantunich visit adds more outdoor time. Apply sun protection before departure and carry repellent for tropical conditions.

Compact rain layer

A lightweight rain layer is useful because wet-season showers can change riding comfort and make trails or archaeological surfaces slicker. Weather can also affect the Mopan River and ferry operation, so conditions matter to the route itself—not just to what you wear.

Refillable water bottle

St. Leonard’s currently lists water as included, but a personal refillable bottle is still practical for a tour that combines riding with walking in Cayo heat. Keep hydration in mind before you feel thirsty.

HORSEBACK + SITE PREPARATION

Three Details Worth Knowing Before the Ride

A riding helmet is provided

St. Leonard’s currently includes a riding helmet and pre-ride preparation. Follow the guide’s fitting and riding instructions rather than planning this tour as an unguided horse rental.

Weather can change the route, not just your comfort

Rain can affect trail footing, mud and the Mopan River. High-river or unsafe conditions may affect the Succotz ferry or normal horseback route, so the guide’s operating decision takes priority over a fixed itinerary.

Prepare for current Xunantunich site rules

Use outdoor-appropriate footwear, remain on designated paths and use handrails where provided. Access to individual structures can change for safety or conservation, so climbing El Castillo or another monument should never be treated as guaranteed.
